Kindergarten Newsletter 10/02/06

October, the Month of the Rosary
Among Catholics, October is dedicated to the Rosary. Each Friday in October we will gather as a school family to pray the Rosary. Please take time to pray the Rosary with your children.

The Prayer of the Month
The prayer for the month of October is the Hail, Holy Queen. Please see the newsletter in the October family envelope.

Topics & Themes
The letter of the week is Pp.
The sight word is you. Please review all the letters and sight words frequently.
We will read about pumpkins and do related projects.
We will learn about the Holy Rosary.
The October homework calendar goes home on Monday.

Events This Week
Monday: September homework calendar is due.
Wednesday: Mass at 1:15pm on the front lawn. Please DO NOT bring animals to school in the morning.
Friday: minimum day as the teachers have a staff meeting. There is no lunch service.

Uniform Update
Please check Mrs. Blackburn’s letter in the family envelope. Students will be allowed to wear Dennis Uniform shorts to school until October 12th. However, on October 4th boys must wear blue corduroy pants; and girls must wear their plaid uniform jumpers as we celebrate Mass.

Backpack Check
Parents, please check your child’s backpack daily for notes and other important papers.

Pizza Days
About twice a month pizza from Pizza Hut or Pizza Villa is offered to students who stay all day. Your child must pre-order the pizza by the date on the form provided in the family envelope. If your child has not pre-ordered pizza, he or she must bring a lunch that day. Pizza can not be purchased on those days.

Field Trip Reminder!
Next Tuesday, October 10th, both kindergarten classes will visit the Pumpkin Patch in Plainsburg.

What’s Coming Up?
1. The end of the first quarter is Thursday, October 12th.
2. There is no school on Friday, October 13th, as the teachers attend an in- service in Visalia.
3. Red Ribbon Week runs from
October 23rd through October 27th.

Cartridges/Cell Phones
We encourage you to bring in your used printer cartridges and old cell phones for recycling. The school earns points towards computer equipment and it is environmentally friendly. If you know of a business that would like to participate, please contact our computer lab instructor, Mr. George Somers. Classes with the most donations win a pizza party at the end of the year.

BoxTops/Campbell’s Soup Labels
Please bring in BoxTops and Campbell’s Soup labels as they benefit the school’s athletic program.

October 2006 Homework Calendar









1 26th Sunday in ordinary time. Go to Mass. Read and pray. Respect Life Sunday
2 Feast of the Guardian Angels. Learn and pray the Angel of God prayer.
3 Read about pumpkins /or read a story about pumpkins. (library/internet?)
4 St. Francis of Assisi Make up a prayer thanking God for pets (all life). Draw a picture.
5 Practice tying shoelaces. Find five things that come in pairs.
6 Count to 30 or higher. Then skip count by 2’s,
7 Feast of the Holy Rosary. Play a memory game with others. Pray with your family.
8 27th Sunday in ordinary time. Go to Mass. Read and pray.
9 Read about spiders or read a spider story. Try the library or the internet.
10 Practice writing your name the school way using your laminated sheet.
11 Review your address, telephone number and birthday.
12 Play a matching game with upper and lower case letters.
13 Write numbers as high as you can.
14 Practice throwing, catching, and bouncing a ball.
15 28th Sunday of ordinary time.
Go to Mass. Read and pray.
16 Read about bats. Draw & write about it.
17 Practice jumping, skipping and hopping.
18 Feast of St. Luke Work on knowing your left and right.
19 List ten things that are rectangles.
20 Make an ABC pattern with things you have at home.
21 Read a favorite book with a partner. Illustrate your favorite part.
22 29th Sunday in ordinary time. Go to Mass. Read and pray.
23 Write the sight words (three times each) using different colors. (markers, colored pencils, etc.)
24 Review the SLE’s with your family. Give examples of each.
25 Discuss with your family about red ribbon week. Draw and write about a healthy habit.
26 Use a box of crayons to review color words (blue, red, white, yellow, green, orange, etc.)
27 Review your address, phone number and birthday.
28 Take a walk with an adult. Note the different types of leaves. Halloween Carnival at OLM
29 30th Sunday in ordinary time. Go to Mass. Read and pray.
30 Have a family discussion on trick-or-treating safety.
31 All Hallows’ Eve (Happy Halloween)

Kindergarten Newsletter 09/25/06

Thank you to all who help us on campus and at home. Thank you for your prayers and support. God bless you always!

Uniform Reminder
Unless Mrs. Blackburn states otherwise, this is the last week that students are allowed to wear Dennis shorts to school until May. As of Monday, October 2nd, boys must wear the navy blue corduroy pants and girls must wear their jumpers with shorts underneath.

Remember, only navy blue Dennis Uniform sweaters or navy blue OLM sweatshirts are allowed in school. If you need uniforms, you can find a Dennis Uniform link on the parent's page of this web site.

Permission Slips Due
Thanks to all who turned in their permission slips for our field trip to the pumpkin patch on October 10th. If you have not done so, please return your child's permisssion slip as soon as posssible as I need to contact drivers. If you need a copy of the permission slip, check the permission slip posting on my blog.

The October homework calendar will go home Friday, September 29th. Please turn in the completed September calendar on Monday, October 2nd.

Milk and Lunch Tickets
Thank you for taking the time to check your child's milk and lunch ticket inventory in the blue pocket chart in the classroom.

Supplies Needed
Thanks to those who brought in napkins this week. Currently we need antibacterial hand wipes. Thanks again for your generocity.

Family Project
Thank you for submitting your family projects. We hope to assemble a class book on Rules very soon. Please complete and return your family's page as soon as possible.

Mass and the Blessing of the Animals
Mass will be celebrated on the lawn at OLM School at 1:15pm on Wednesday, October 4th, the feast of St. Francis. Students will sit with their classes. There will be an area for families and pets. Watch for more information in the October family envelope.

Feast Days
Friday, September 29th, is the feast of saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, archangels. Monday, October 2nd, is the feast of the guardian angels. Remember to ask them to pray for us and protect us.

Kindergarten Newsletter 09/18/06


Welcome to another busy week in kindergarten.
Thanks
Thanks to all who share their time, talents, and treasures with us. You are a blessing.
Supplies Needed
We are in need of table napkins for snack time. Thanks.
Themes and Topics
We will continue to work on shapes, colors, shape words and color words.
We will discuss fall as that season begins Friday, September 22nd.
We will do some activities with apples.
The sight word is like and the letter of the week is Mm.
Cooler Mornings
Fall is in the air and the mornings are cooler. Kindergartners are a bit chillled as we pray ouside each morning as a school family. A Dennis Uniform sweatshirt or sweater is recommended. Please clearly label your child's belongings.
Remember, only OLM sweatshirts or Dennis Uniform cardigans are allowed in school. Please refer to the OLM handbook for more details regarding uniforms.
Pumpkin Patch Permission Slips
Permission slips for our field trip to the pumpkin patch on October 10th will go home this week. Please return the completed form by Friday, September 29th. See my blog for additional forms.
Events for Friday, September 22nd
Snack sale takes place during morning recess.
Game Day (2:30pm to 4:00) for students in kindergarten through second grades
Progress Reports
Progress reports go home Friday, September 22nd. Please read, sign, and return your child's report by Monday, September 25th.
Health Fair
Please attend the seventh annual health fair on Sunday, September 24th from 8:30am to 1pm in and around St. Patrick's Parish Hall. There will be good food and many fun and informative stations. Younger students can earn prizes for participating.
Do you know the SLE's?
I'm sure you are very proud of our kindergarten students as they are able to recite all the main headings of OLM School's Schoolwide Learning Expectations. Please continue to review them and their subheadings with your children.

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Permission Slip





My child ______________________________________ has my permission to go on a field trip with Mrs. Poole’s kindergarten classes to the Bear Creek Pumpkin Patch in Plainsburg on Tuesday, October 10th.

Transportation will be by private car. Sorry, no siblings are allowed. We will leave OLM School at about 8:30 am and return by 11:00am.

If your child is under six years old and weighs less than 60 pounds, he or she must ride in an appropriate car seat. Please bring the car seat to school the morning of the trip.

Students will be allowed to wear appropriate free dress. Comfortable clothes and waking shoes are recommended.

At Bear Creek Pumpkin Patch the children will have an opportunity to:

Select a pumpkin.
Walk through a corn maze.
Enjoy Indian face painting
Learn about how pumpkins grow.
Make Indian flour
Parent volunteers will provide snacks for the children.

Kindergarten Newsletter 09/11/06

Open House
Thanks to all who attended OLM School’s open house yesterday afternoon. It was nice to see you, your families and friends.

Welcome!

We welcome a new student who just joined us last week. We're glad that he is with us in kindergarten at OLM School.


Catalog Sale Ends Wednesday
The catalog/cookie dough sale ends this Wednesday, September 13th. Please turn in your packets (including money) by 3pm this Wednesday. There are individual and class prizes!

Writing Practice

In this week's folder you will find a laminated sheet with your child's name at the top. He or she may use dry erase makers to practice writing his or her name "the school way".

Themes and Topics
This week we will continue to work with colors and color words.
We will study six basic shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle, oval, and diamond).
We will learn to recognize, extend, and create patterns.
The letter of the week is Dd.
The sight word is I.
We will discuss the fact that God made us; and we are good.

Volunteers/Drivers

We plan to go to the pumpkin patch in Plainsburg October 10th. If you plan to volunteer on campus or drive for any of our field trips, you must attend one of the Safe Environment inservices. You must also contact the Merced Sheriff's Department to be fingerprinted. Please see the September newsletter for more information. Thanks to all who have taken the time to attend an inservice.

Box Tops/Campbell's Soup Labels
These items can be placed in the envelope located on the side of my classroom refrigerator.

Cartridges & Cell Phones
OLM School is collecting empty ink cartridges and old cell phones for new computer equipment. Individuals, families, businesses, etc. are encouraged to get involved. The class that collects the most will earn a pizza party at the end of the year.
It’s good for the school and the environment.

Kindergarten Newsletter 09/05/06


September is in full swing! The school Mass last Friday was beautiful and the kindergartners behaved well.

Themes and Topics
The letter of the week is Rr as in rocket.
The sight word is and.
We will explore colors, color words, and sorting by color.
The prayer for September is the morning offering.

Mary's Birthday
Friday, September 8th, we celebrate the birthday of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Please remember to honor her and ask her to pray for us.

School Pictures
School pictures will be taken Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Return the Plastic Folders
Each week I give your child an opaque, colored plastic folder with his or her name on it. It is your child's responsibility to bring it to school the very next day and place it in the box provided. This is an efficient means of communication among students, parents, and teacher.

Open House
Please come to OLM School's open house on Sunday, September 10th. Classrooms and other facilities will be open from noon until 2pm. Tri-tip dinners will be available in the auditorium.

Important Notice to all OLM Volunteers
We plan to go to the pumpkin patch in Plainsburg in October.
If you plan to volunteer on campus or drive for any of our field trips, you must attend one of the Safe Environment inservices.

Catalog Sale
The catalog sale is in full swing. The packets and money are due no later that September 13th at 3pm.

Book It!
Our class is participating in Pizza Hut's "Book It" program which starts October 1st and runs through March 31st.
Your child must read 15 minutes every day and check off the activities on the homework calendar. At the beginning of each month your child must bring in the completed homework calendar (with his or her name at the top of the paper). Then he or she will earn a pizza award certificate that is redeemable for a free one-topping personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut.

Please read and save the September Newsletter which went home in the family envelope last week. It contains a great deal of important information.
